In line with the corporate’s rapid development and the increasing performances as well as the position of Car Terminal as one of the chains in automotive industry development in Indonesia, a brisk entity is highly required in order to compete globally. In response to the demand, on 5 November 2012, by virtue of the Deed No.10/2012, Tanjung Priok Car Terminal was shifted into a separate corporate body 99% shares owned by PT Pelabuhan Indonesia II (Persero) and 1 % owned by PT Multi Terminal Indonesia.

In August 2006, ground-breaking of Car Terminal construction was undertaken and initiated by The Minister of SOEs, Sugiharto and The Minister of Transportation, Hatta Rajasa. The construction was carried out by PT Wijaya Karya and finished in the following year. In June 2007, Car Terminal Tanjung Priok, a business unit of PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) Tanjung Priok Chapter was officially inaugurated by the Vice President of Indonesia, Muhammad Jusuf Kalla. The terminal unit was later called Tanjung Priok Car Terminal (TPT).

Before the terminal was officially operated, the elevation test of the vessel ramp door and Car Terminal dock was done on 4 October 2007. Cargo owners conducted the inspection using domestic liner cargo vessel (KM Serasi II) before they accommodated other vessels with greater DWT for export/import purposes. This operation is critical since it subjects to safety cargo procedure at IKT terminal. The test would determine if IKT dock met the standard of operation at Ro-Ro terminal.

The national automotive industry has undergone a remarkable growth during the last decade. This success is a result of increased consumer purchasing power and trust from the global automotive manufacturer towards Indonesia as the production base. Various automotive manufactures were established in Indonesia and this opportunity must be supported by the Government through infrastructure enhancements in the automotive industry sector. Trans-island or export/import vehicle distribution is administered by the Ports utilizing conventional or multi-purpose terminals. Therefore, to elevate the productivity and to accelerate the distribution activities, accommodating a special port that handles cars, heavy machines and equipment is required. To accomplish that, in 2006 Vice President of The Republic of Indonesia, Jusuf Kalla, recommended to establish particular ports for cargo loading and unloading operations on Ro-Ro vessels (Roll on Roll off) due to the fact that vehicle export/import operations were constrained due to lack of appropriate dock facilities with world-class-standard cargo operations. Responding to this idea, on 14 March 2006, PT Pelabuhan Indonesia II (Persero), assigned an ITB LAPI Consultancy Service to initiate car terminal construction draft for Tanjung Priok.
